An iron fist has been pounded in a New Mexico middle school. Four middle school students were tossing erasers and workbooks out of an open second story window, then one of the eighth graders ignited the impulsiveness and threw out an American flag on a stick. The
The 14-year-old was singled out and given a 10-day suspension, but the Principal wants long-term suspension or expulsion. The Principal, Robert Archuleta called the school resource officer with the Rio Arriba County and they said that it was a federal offense so they forwarded him to the F.B.I. Really, a Federal offense?
The Supreme Court has already ruled the desecration of the American flag is protected by the 1st Amendment as free speech. Nothing happened to Lil’ Wayne when he was dancing on one. But Archuleta says otherwise, he says that there is a federal law that prohibits disgracing Old Glory. “I am firm believer in citizenship and U.S. history and our history, and these are going to be our future leaders. I want them to understand they have to take responsibility.” These kids were laughing and said that they were just messing around. “So I want to hold him accountable.” Archuleta said. The principal continued in a passionate voice by saying “I’m a Veteran and my dad fought in World War 2, a lot of men have died over the flag, men and women, we fought to keep our country safe and to keep it free.”
The student has a hearing coming up where the principal will recommend more that the 10-day suspension. Many parents and community members of Espanola are surprised at what the Boy did, as well as the punishment being handed down. Curtis Schattschneider said ” I guess I can’t believe that they are going to take such measures, I can understand where he is coming from because we do need to respect our American flag, but to go that far in teaching him a lesson, I think might even hurt him down the road.” Instead of this complete eviction from his school, why doesn’t this misinformed Dictator have a First Amendment Day at Carlos F. Vigil middle school and teach his students that this is not against the Law. Calling the FBI is ludicrous, and he should be ashamed of himself, if he praises his service to this country so much, then his loyalty to the Constitution that he raised his hand for should prevail and not any kind of authoritarian intervention.
