The Senate, by a vote of 68-31, invoked cloture and now moves forward on the motion to proceed to a gun control bill introduced by Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV). Unless an agreement is reached, the Senate will debate for 30 hours the motion before another vote is taken to began debate and amendments on the legislation.
On Wednesday, Senators Mancin (D-WV) and Toomey (R-PA) announced an agreement on extending background checks for firearm purchases. The Hill newspaper reports that Majority Leader Reid has not indicated if he would substitute the Mancin-Toomey language for the proposed background checks made by Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) that Senate Republicans say they will not support.
