With all the overspending and fat pocketed state legislators having gone all-in on the tax revenue that is taken from its citizens, they are now wanting even more. The rise in the volume of people enjoying the convenience of shopping in their pajamas by purchasing goods online will soon be forced to give-up more of their income by having an additional sales tax added to their once tax-free totals.
Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin, without hesitation, signed the Retail Protection Act, that will require online retailers to either begin collecting sales tax on their customers in Oklahoma or mail them an extortion notice at the end of the year to cough up even more money to the state.
Republican State Representative Chad Caldwell who lives off of the stolen money and the created the new law said, “The governor’s signature helps protect Oklahoma businesses by lessening the benefit online retailers receive by not collecting Oklahoma Sales tax.” He added, “This levels the playing field for our Oklahoma retailers that are already collecting and remitting sales tax from the point of sale. Currently, our state is missing out on millions of dollars in tax that is not collected by out-of-state online retailers and is very minimally reported by Oklahoma taxpayers.” Caldwell softens the blow by saying, “This also means millions of dollars for vital state services such as education and health care.” As of now Oklahoman’s are supposed to send in taxes at the end of the year, but the sticky-fingered lawmakers are whining that only about 4% of their constituents actually do it. So they’ll just create another law and disguise it as protection, and that it will go to their failing school districts that gobble up all the school taxes that are collected. The 4.5 state% income tax burden that is already upon the backs of these Midwesterners along with the nations most toll roads, are dwindling their earnings, which leave them with less money left over to feed themselves and their families. Tax Freedom is something the government frowns upon so when they can plant a stake in it they will. Internet-based businesses also argue that collecting taxes on their customers from 45 different states that tax retail sales would be extremely burdensome and not cost-effective. South Dakota’s Department of Revenue will begin suing many internet retailers under the state’s new remote seller sales tax law, which might gain popularity from other money hungry states and could eventually overturn federal tax policy. These publicly funded legislators need an awakening and find a better solution than extorting more from the people they serve. Dr. Ron Paul provides a remedy here, “We need to understand the more government spends, the more freedom is lost…Instead of simply debating spending levels, we ought to be debating whether the departments, agencies, and programs funded by the budget should exist at all.”
Under South Dakota’s recently enacted S.B. 106, online companies that sell $100,000 or more of products and goods to people inside their state or at the minimum complete at least 200 separate transactions within a year must collect and remit sales tax, even though they have no physical presence in the state that’s demanding the money. This took effect on May 1st, then yesterday South Dakotans got pinched again with a half percent increase in the sales tax rate that is now at 4.5 percent. South Dakota’s new law goes beyond the 1992 Quill vs. North Dakota ruling by claiming that businesses have a presence in a state based on a volume of sales they have there. Netchoice, an online retail group along with the American Catalog Mailers Association (ACMA) are in litigation now against South Dakota in a fight to overturn its new law. The current GOP lawmakers are continuously squeezing the citizens while being hypocritical, and condemning the Socialist philosophies that they are blindly enacting on us.
“One thing is clear: The Founding Fathers never intended a nation where citizens would pay nearly half of everything they earn to the government.” -Ron Paul
