We are on track for another record breaking year in gun sales. Out of the first six months this year, we’ve seen a 40% increase in three of those months, compared to last year.
In June the FBI conducted over 2 million background checks on people trying to purchase firearms, according to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). That’s a 40% increase from June of last year when over 1 million background checks were conducted.
At this time last year there was over 10 million background checks. So far in 2016 there have already been 13.8 million, about a 32% increase. 2015 was a record-breaking year for gun sales with 23.1 million background checks and, with every month so far in 2016 breaking records, we’re on track to beat that this year.
Interestingly enough, the June 2016 numbers were released as a new CBS poll showed the percentage of American households with at least one firearm dropped to a 35-year low.
The decrease in gun-owning households, combined with the surge in sales, seems to suggest that current gun owners, like myself are adding to their arsenals.
Usually, when a mass shooting happens people tend to buy more guns. Some are scared and want to protect themselves, others are scared politicians are going to start banning them. An employee at Cheaper than Dirt confirmed their sales were at an unusually high level for summer. The company saw a triple in sales after the recent Dallas police shooting and the surge is common with most mass shootings.
In addition, we have seen spikes in guns sales after the movie theater in Colorado, Sandy Hook, and now Orlando.
I say, stock up on guns, ammo and food. These are going to be essential when times get worse and trust me, they are going to get worse. Reach out to like minds and the people you trust. Start building relationships in your community and open lines of communication.
Lastly, I do not think the government will start kicking down doors illegally. My guess is they will act under the “law” and in the name of security.
