The University of Houston’s Downtown Campus will host a full-scale emergency management drill tomorrow from
8:00am to 11:00am morning joining with several government agencies and local law inforcement departments.
The Press release states that the public should not be alarmed and that it’s just training.
This emergency management drill will take place in the north part of the campus in the Daly Street student parking lot. The Shea Street Building will include the Houston Fire Department, Houston Police Department, Harris County Sheriff’s Office,
Department of Homeland Security in Houston, Transportation Security Administration, METRO and UHD Police Department.
The entire Daly Street parking lot will be closed during the drill and student parking will only be available in Lot’s A and B.
Carol Manousos, UHD’s director of emergency management is saying that “UHD joined with METRO in a collaborative effort to plan, develop and coordinate this emergency management drill and incorporate multiple law enforcement agencies. Working with response partners prepares the University for emergency situations and enhances the safety of our students, faculty, staff and visitors. This real-time drill will simulate an actual emergency and provide a learning experience between participating agencies.”
This drill is providing an opportunity for a number of departments in the University which joins the UHD Police Department and University Relations and Facilities Management together to conduct emergency procedures and record communications in the unfortunate event of an emergency crisis. The drill will also extend a hand the solidify the University’s working relationships with Harris County and the City of Houston’s city=wide emergency management response teams.
The media is being invited but are instructed to set up in the free speech zone and have to set up on the North Deck of campus. People are to be aware and not to be scared of any police officers, reporters, or emergency vehicles on or around campus, and be forewarned that there will be loud shouts and sirens going off just north of campus.
